I was brought on board to design the interior structure for an international client, Zulubunker. The existing Pop-Up Box forms part of the Bikini Berlin mall and the clients who are importers of African design decor and apparel looked to Cape Town for the design.

The brief was to design a display area while enclosing the space and adding a storage area. Product quantity was not consistent so the design had to be modular in order to accommodate what was available.

We looked at the branding of the company, being focused on Zulu culture I grabbed Zulu patterns and textures as inspiration. We decided on the triangle and zig-zag pattern dominant in Zulu culture.

The storage displays was designed in a modular triangle shape at different heights, this created multiple display surfaces while making it easy to configure different layouts. The display triangles were finished in a concrete paint as to not detract from the colourful products on display.

The space was enclosed by using perforated metal sheeting in a zig-zag pattern. This allowed enclosure while still keeping the space it light and open. The perforated sheets also added to the modular design as shelves were easily installed and disassembled when required.

The zig-zag pattern of the perforated sheets allowed for product to be displayed to foot traffic outside, this was ideally to spark interest and forcing clients to enter the showroom to see the product up close.
